Blog: Place the Flashlight between your Eyes

“Place the flashlight between your eyes and light up the clothes.” That was the instruction we got before the show of Jacob Kok began.

It was so much fun, on the reflector fabric of the outfit, you only saw your own light shining. The whole runway was filled with glowing silhouettes, we felt like little kids.

Jacob Kok earned his show on the Amsterdam Fashion Week by winning the Dutch “Project Catwalk 2011.” In this television program he made very conceptual clothing, which made people very curious to his first own show.

His show was really balanced well between the Conceptual Jacob, we already knew, and the wearable Jacob we just met.

“Jacob fills a gap in Dutch Fashion with his clothes, it is between the known extreme and the known wearable here in the Netherlands,” says Geo Timmerman. I think he really did a great job by sticking to his own style and actually agree with Geo.

I want to give Jacob a big compliment, I think it is the biggest compliment you can get as a designer. ‘That I can recognise his clothes, as his clothes. It’s a brand thing and his style of course, which he stays true to.

A special fact about his show: he made some of his fabrics on his own. He made them at the Textile Museum in Tilburg. They were very pretty! I like the voluminous fabrics and silhouettes the most. I also loved that he did not pick “perfect” models for his show and I think that’s a great statement in Fashion. He even made them look ugly with his funny helmets. Some models got alien eyes, looking through that helmet and another one got a blown up nose.

I was surprised and pleased with this show. It is new, it is experimental and it worked! Also curious about his pieces? Watch the slide show down here on the Inspiration Network!
